You could argue that they are both important, but are they?
What is a few links worth?
What is the Front Page of Google Worth?
Referred clients vs New Clients should be the title of this post, but it would not fair as well for “google juice”. Where Social Media Marketing beats SEO is in being social, building your brand of sorts. Small business owners have a hard time creating a brand that is as recognizable as Coke, McDonald’s, or Walmart. The only way they can really brand themselves is through relationships. People running into your logo and remembering the last experience they had with you. What if they run into often enough for them to actually remember you. That is what branding is about. It can cost tens of thousands to brand a business using traditional marketing. Social Media just takes time and a common message. A chance to be real with the people who you want to know. The people you actually want to do business with.
But its not working fast enough. This is where SEO can help. When you are trying Social Media to build up your widget business there are only so many people you know that need them. So you need new people to find you. For most small businesses their website is their greatest drawback when it comes to being found on Google. Most small business websites look like a high school kid did it for a website class project and left them high and dry to fend for themselves. The small business owner got exactly what he paid for…. ZILCH.
Today’s website design can make or break your business. If the only experience someone has with your business is something the kid next door created for you, where do you think that possible client will go… Next door. Next door is just a click away on Google. So what I am trying to say is this. You wouldn’t spend thousands of dollars on a TV ad or Radio Spot and not have control over the message. Why are you doing it with your website. A marketing tool that when done right can reach Millions of people.
A good website includes this list of qualities:
1. A purpose- Why would someone want to stop there
2. A Domain Name that isn’t five names long
3. Basic Search Engine Optimization Programming- Keywords, Meta Description, Title Tags, Headings
4. Content about your product or services
5. A simple blog that is updated on a weekly basis
6. A Plan to update
So in the end its a tie between Social Media Marketing vs Search Engine Optimization
Work on developing the Relationship with those you know need your product while also working to find new people who need you.
Would you like me to take a look at your website.. Leave me a comment and I would be more than happy to stop by and give you some ideas.
